Job Description
The Basics:
– This is a full-time position, with a contract of 6 months.
– The person we hire for this position will focus on discovering and designing hardware for consumer medical products.
– This is an in-office position. Our office is located in downtown Toronto.
– Work hours are flexible, but meetings are likely to fall within the traditional 8-5 (EST) workday.
– The pay range for this position is $5,000 – $6,000 bi-weekly.
Hi! I’m Houston, and I lead our Product Team at Synex Medical. We’re a ~30 person medical device startup that’s developing a miniaturized health monitor that can measure critical blood metabolites non-invasively. That technology is based on novel techniques we’ve developed in magnetic resonance.
We’re scaling to build our first product, which will measure glucose and lactate non-invasively. We are gearing up for some big milestones (prototypes, clinical validation, MVP delivery). To support these milestones, we’re looking to grow our Product team.
That team consists of a small passionate group (PM, ID, UX, and executive), so you will be the third full-time designer at Synex. You’ll work with our research team to design and develop ergonomic and functional improvements to our prototypes, while researching and defining elements of our future product.
Here are a couple of the things we need your help with:
-Primary and secondary human dimensioning research with a specific focus on fingers and hands to design the human-product interfaces.
-Design and fabrication of rapid prototypes, with a specific focus on medical device human interfaces.
-Extensive testing and iteration with our research team.
-Developing methods to assess usability and product compatibility across our user group.
-Gap filling – as the team grows and changes, you will be often called upon to try new things!
Synex is a small company inventing revolutionary technology. The path forward is uncertain, and it will be filled with prototypes that never see the light of day. If you’re someone that loves the process and is comfortable navigating through some ambiguity, you might be a good fit!
We will extensively rely on your ability to close the loop between ideation, prototype fabrication, and testing. We all stretch ourselves to get the job done – but our intention is that you join with a comfortable grasp of these skills. We need someone who’s excited to try new things, but will ask for help when they need it (while giving ample feedback to the rest of the product group).
We are working in a highly regulated medical space, so documentation and adherence to processes are really important. You should be prepared to work within those constraints.
Here are a couple of qualifications we believe you’ll need to be successful:
– Ability to analyze human dimensions and variations in hand anatomy to design precision products optimized for mass production.
– Ability to rapidly prototype by ideating solutions to problems, creating prototypes, and iterating on them.
– Design and develop parts using CAD for rapid prototyping that interface directly with the human body.
– Proficiency in traditional model-making techniques, including hand fabrication, casting, and related methods.
– Ability to clearly document processes, evidence and rationale for designs.
– Comfort translating the technical details of our products to simple and elegant solutions for our users.
