Position Summary
You will work on cross-functional teams to build scalable infrastructure for our government — designing, implementing, and delivering services that millions of Americans depend on. You care deeply about working on technology that improves people’s lives but doesn’t think technology is always the answer. You are passionate about building large-scale systems that are inclusive, well-designed, fast, scalable, and secure, and you’ll help set high standards for our teams in terms of simplicity, empathy, and accessibility.
As a senior infrastructure engineer, you may be responsible for technical leadership of one or more DevOps/infrastructure teams and large-scale systems. You may optionally be a people manager as well, but that is not required. The objective is to provide smooth DevOps and infrastructure management for a variety of COTS or custom products with a strong focus on automation, organization, and communication. Your work enables application development teams to run effectively in the cloud to deliver users a modern experience. You will be responsible for delivering on client requirements as well as providing long-term oversight and vision to help shape future work. Your strong cross-functional communication skills will complement your technical leadership skills to provide the highest value government systems.
You will be working within the government ecosystem, which means working, sometimes closely, with other government contractors and civil servants. Working with people outside of your company means you’ll likely encounter different working styles and cultural norms. At the same time, working as part of a larger team allows us to deliver on projects of larger scale and complexity.
The government also imposes a level of bureaucracy that is typically not present in a company of our size in the private sector. We operate in a regulated environment, where checks and compliance are built into the process of building software. This can make the path to production slower and some decisions, such as tools and processes, lie outside of our control. You view these as challenges and can look for creative engineering solutions within existing constraints to provide the highest-leverage solutions to fulfill our mission.
You will be working with legacy systems. While we work to modernize government technology, we do that within an existing ecosystem. We always focus on providing real, short-term value while keeping our eyes on long-term goals. This usually means getting to know legacy systems, often with poor documentation and unreliable narrators, and trying to determine how to replicate the systems’ behavior or how to integrate with these systems. This is a great opportunity for engineers who enjoy software archaeology. If you care deeply about how software systems work over time, and building systems for longevity and resilience, this work is for you.
What you’ll do

- Work with a cross-functional team to deliver on project requirements
- Set technical direction and standards for your team to ensure scalability, reliability, security, and system compliance
- Code, manage, configure, and maintain services update documentation and runbooks
- Mentor less senior engineers
- Optionally be a people manager for other engineers
- Join our on-call rotation as a first line of defense during production issues
- Take part in hiring activities (e.g., submitting referrals, conducting interviews, and attending interview debriefs), as needed
What we’re looking for

- Experience: Minimum of 7 years
- Previous experience maintaining a medium or large-scale production system or COTS products using Infrastructure as Code
- Broad experience with Cloud products in AWS or Azure
- Significant experience in one or more of the following areas: Cloud Infrastructure, Unix/Linux, Windows, Scripting, or Security
- Ability to automate procedural tasks using scripting in Shell, PowerShell, Bash, or coding in Python, Javascript, or Ruby
- Experience with Terraform and/or CloudFormation, Ansible, or other IaC and automation tools
- Excellent written and real-time communication skills, technical and otherwise
- Ability to pick up and learn new development and operations skills
$153,000 – $171,000 a year
Other requirements
● Must have lived in the United States for at least three (3) of the past five (5) years.
● An active green card or citizenship is required.
● Candidates who are offered a job with Nava must possess work authorization which does not require sponsorship by the employer for a visa now or in the future.
● Offer of hire is contingent upon completion of a background check that includes a criminal record history review.
