Born & brought up in the UK, I worked for a number of FMCG companies before being made redundant twice during the financial crisis. I saw this as an opportunity to change things up and left the race for France, where I’ve been living and working for the last ten years. I knew noone, didn’t know the area and didn’t speak French, but I wasn’t daunted in the slightest. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and I’m currently looking to move to Portugal for more stimulation and to leave the mountains for the sea.

I’ve always had side projects throughout my life and I’ve channelled my creativity into them; I set up a website when I was in my early twenties to help sell paintings and art that I’d created or had commissions for. My grandma taught me to sew and I’ve been running a side project repairing clothing, making curtains, doing alterations and fixing gear for around ten years, for both individuals and businesses. I’ve helped create content for a travel/walking app where my words were recorded to play on the app so that people using it could focus on the scenery instead of looking at their phones. I’ve helped a number of small businesses set up their own social media channels and given them a strategy or content planner to help them through their first year and beyond.

I’ve been an ambassador for a well known mountain bike clothing brand, but decided that there wasn’t enough focus on women’s fit and a broader choice of colours, not just with them but across all the major manufacturers. So I’m working on another side project to offer a better choice when it comes to women’s mountain bike clothing, accessories and perhaps other sports in the future.

I've worked in a number of different industries over the past twenty years, which has given me a broad depth of experience and a solid, well-honed skill set and a confident, positive outlook. I am particularly strong in administrative and operational or organisational roles and I really enjoy writing and editing, which I’ve spent the last 7-8 years doing full-time as well as in a some of the side projects mentioned above.

I enjoy working on researching, writing, editing and content planning. I’m extremely versatile, have a really good work ethic and am really motivated to move into an role where I can utilise my skills and knowledge to help develop the business I’m working for, as well as developing my own knowledge.

I’m inquisitive and love to learn new things, and I am not afraid to ask questions to clarify details. I take a positive approach to change. I believe in good team communication and enjoy building relationships with others, not only to get the job done but also because I take pride in seeing others develop and being part of a cohesive team. I’m highly organised and take a disciplined and planned approach to my work. I am confident and have a good sense of judgement and can multitask well. I’m extremely trustworthy, and work well autonomously.

Outside work I’m nerdy about archaeology and ancient art (which I studied and have a huge passion for), nature (which I love to learn about) and mountain biking (which has been my hobby for as long as I can remember). I like to ride new places and join events to bump up the numbers of women taking part, with a view to encouraging more women to do the same; So far I’ve taken part in the “Megavalance”, “Inca Avalanche” and the “Mountain of Hell” and there are a few more on my bucket list that I’d like to tick off.

I’m not afraid to put myself out of my comfort zone, either in or out of work, in the pursuit of learning or experiencing new things, or to develop.

Nov’11 – Nov’17 See The World / Powder Blue

Senior Content Editor / Writer / Managing Editor - Online destination guides

See The World had 26 online destination guide websites in it’s portfolio, 14 of which I was personally responsible for.

News & Features

Researching and writing news articles for 14 destinations on a daily basis & as it happened. Acted as a news stringer/fixer for ITV & provided live coverage for CNN & BBC Radio 5 Live for a story that hit international headlines in Chamonix in July 2012. Editing and publishing videos either from third parties or freelance reporters. Creating ideas for new feature articles, based on key site traffic areas & popular topics for each destination. Writing & editing features myself or organising freelancers to create the feature for the business. Planning the publishing dates for features based on events, booking periods through the ski season, peak traffic dates or school holiday dates. Arranging interviews with clients & characters from each destination. Optimising titles & features for SEO.

Editing & Publishing

Editing and publishing time sensitive news, snow reports & snow ‘dump alerts’ from winter reporters. Reviewing photos and video content at a fast pace to ensure every site had new, almost daily content being published. Searching out new videos for publishing either immediately or scheduled. Ensuring social media posts were scheduled in from the team to maintain flow, week to week through the season.

Events

Writing & publishing event previews. Attending events & press trips or organising freelance or staffers to attend events to write reviews and photograph/video to publish as soon as possible after the event. Identifying key new events to add to each site, & publishing them. Managing annual events & updating as necessary. Scheduling previews/reviews through the year.

Planning & Management

Managing the content maintenance yearly planner & allocating tasks to staff team each month. Organising photographers for specific site based projects & agreeing and managing costs for travel, accommodation, lift passes and other expenses. Planning and scheduling winter content in resorts, either for advertising partners or to fill gaps in content or for new features and events or activities. Scheduling content to be published on a day by day basis & decision making on what to publish sooner or later. Reviewing annual features for re-editing and republishing where appropriate.

Recruitment

I was personally responsible for hiring all permanent staff in our Chamonix office and 30-40 freelancers/stringers (writers / photographers / videographers) each winter to work in each of the ski destinations, plus a small team over the summer.

Budget Management

Keeping within the constraints of an annual freelance budget & ensuring content team members were   aware of their share of the spend & where to best spend it. Managing the rate cards for each sector of freelancer.

Achievements

When I started at the company there were 13 websites in only ski destinations & during my time there I helped launch the next wave of 13 new city & beach destination websites. I identified the need for an umbrella brand as the business expanded & developed; I suggested the ski destination site names should fall into line with the new branding ‘See.. Destination name’ & the purchase of those new domain names. I developed ideas to improve our dump alerts & newsletters to become more magazine like & visual in style, working with the site developers to get the best look & functionality for users. I identified the commercial opportunity to use the events calendar on all websites for additional commercial click-throughs, therefore keeping visitors on the sites longer as well as increasing chances for commercial gain. I increased our freelance staff retention levels, to around 30 people each winter from a small base of 4 or 5 people. I introduced new systems & management processes & cloud-based documents to keep on top of site content, curation, maintenance, feature & events scheduling. I was able to edit and publish a large volume of work at a fast pace, juggling lots of tasks at once & being able to change tack very quickly based on the demands of either the French office director, the sales team, our advertising partners or to handle a breaking news story.
