The Operational Support Division technical advice, training, and systems to support operation of the National Electricity Market (NEM) and the eastern Australian interconnection. The services including planning the operation of the power system, forecasting demand in operational timeframes, modelling network congestion and grids, and developing the NEM central dispatch process. This is important in ensuring AEMO operates the NEM efficiently. Operational Support also oversees the training of control room operators in the NEM, WEM/SWIS and Victorian gas markets.

 

About the role 
The Electricity Market Monitoring function is responsible for monitoring that AEMO’s NEM operations and market outcomes are in accordance with the NER. This includes identifying scheduling errors, calculating direction compensation and performing the business ownership role for key NEM systems to ensure that system outcomes reflect the rules. The function is also responsible for monitoring, reporting and analysing outcomes in the NEM so as to derive insights which inform stakeholders on the performance of the market.

 

What you will be doing 

The position is responsible for managing a team of professional staff from different STEM disciplines in eastern AEMO locations to:

  • Monitor and report on NEM market and system outcomes.
  • Derive insights from market events, outcomes and trends to inform key stakeholders of market behaviours and opportunities for market improvement.
  • Calculate compensation for directions and scheduling errors.
  • Determine and report on scheduling errors and report on relevant events.
  • Undertake detailed design and user acceptance testing of market systems during change processes.
  • Ensure correct market outcomes during administered pricing or market suspension.
  • Provide support, coaching, and peer-review for staff undertaking technical analysis and more broadly to maximise their skills and potential within the organisation.
  • Demonstrate compliance with Workplace Health and Safety, Anti-Discrimination, and Competition and Consumer Acts.

 

What you will bring to the role 

Education/ Certificates

  • A tertiary qualification in engineering, finance/economics/business, maths, science or similar technical discipline.

Experience and Knowledge

  • Understanding of power and transmission system operations.
  • In depth knowledge of NER, NEM operations and NEMDE design.
  • In depth understanding of the interaction between the power system and electricity market systems with demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge to representative problems and situations.
  • A solid understanding of the principles and practices associated with the operation of electricity & gas markets within Australia.
  • Demonstrated experience managing risk and compliance obligations and dealing with incident response in an operational environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and developing members of a team.
  • Previous experience in providing strategic advice to senior stakeholders on complex technical issues.
