Victorian Planning & Connections is a division within AEMO’s System Design department, with the key objective to effectively plan and deliver Victorian electricity transmission augmentations, and enable new transmission connections, in the long-term interests of consumers. The Victorian Transmission Planning team is responsible for producing insights relevant to Victoria’s energy market and transmission network, as well as developing plans to meet the needs of Australia’s energy transition focused on efficient planning and development of the Victorian Electricity Transmission Network. The team is located across a number of AEMO’s offices and manages a number of projects that are currently at various phases from early conception through to investment planning and execution.

 

About the role

Engineers within the Victorian Transmission Planning team are responsible for undertaking power system studies, interpreting results, and providing technical advice on matters relating to network adequacy, security, and economic investments, and communicating recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders in support of transmission investment decisions.

 

What you will be doing

  • Undertake simulation and analysis of the Victorian transmission network using specialised computer simulation tools and identify network capability and emerging limitations. 
  • Interpret and justify simulation outcomes, draw conclusions, and provide robust recommendations on network adequacy and investment options. 
  • Prepare clear, concise, and high quality written and verbal communication, including reports, stakeholder presentations, information packs, briefing papers, and contributions to the production of key planning documents (such as the VAPR and Regulatory Investment Test-Transmission reports). 
  • Develop and implement policies for AEMO in conjunction with senior staff, management, and external stakeholders to ensure a consistent approach and clarity of process. 
  • Proactively engage with internal and external stakeholders to ensure consistent messaging across teams and communicate AEMO position on planning related matters.

 

What you will bring to the role 

Education/ Certificates 

 

  • Tertiary qualifications in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.

 

Experience and Knowledge 

  • Industry or related experience in electricity transmission network planning. 
  • Proficiency in using electricity network analysis tools or relevant software (such as PSS/E) and interpreting results. 
  • Experience in programming, in languages such as Python, will be considered favorably. 
  • Understanding of cost benefit assessment of projects including probability-based analysis of investment decisions. 
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to make recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Ability to prepare high quality reports suitable for senior management and external stakeholders.
  • Sound knowledge of the role and functions of AEMO, particularly its Victorian Planning functions, the energy markets and relevant laws, regulations, rules, licenses, and agreements.
