The First Peoples Wellness Circle (FPWC) is an Indigenous-led national not-for-profit dedicated to enhancing the lives of Canada’s First Peoples by addressing healing, wellness, and mental wellness barriers. The organization’s purpose is to walk with and support First Peoples and communities to share collective intelligence for healing, peace-making, and living a good life. FPWC’s approach is centred on promoting wellness pathways based on traditional knowledge and culture that supports healing and wellness and fosters a two-eyed seeing approach. FPWC envisions a nation where our First Peoples experience wholistic health and wellness by championing diverse cultural values, beliefs, and practices.

FPWC’s new strategic plan encompasses four main objectives: Growth, The Framework, Relationships, and Collective Intelligence. Through these objectives, we seek to build relationships with Indigenous and non-Indigenous organizations and build workforce capacity by sharing collective intelligence and implementing the First Nations Mental Wellness Continuum Framework. The FPWC works diligently to advocate for transformative change, aiming to create wellness and whole health pathways for Canada’s First Peoples shaped by diverse Indigenous cultural lenses and knowledge.

We are currently looking to fill the position of Communications Assistant. This is a part-time (18.75 hours per week) term employment from January 6, 2025, to March 31, 2025, and is a fully remote position. Our head office is located in North Bay, Ontario.

Under the direction and supervision of the Director of Strategic Initiatives and Programs, the Communications Assistant is responsible to support the implementation of FPWC’s communications and marketing strategy by assisting with content creation, editing, and distribution across various platforms, including publications, social media, and the website. Collaborate with the Sr. Communications Lead and other teams to enhance FPWC’s brand awareness, manage events, maintain communication processes, and provide updates to stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the coordination, writing, editing, and distribution of content to promote FPWC brand and resources, including publications, annual reports, and other marketing material that communicate FPWC’s activities, products, and services. (e.g., communication briefings, newsletter, blogs)
  • Support the implementation of FPWC’s communications and marketing strategy, led by the Sr. Communications Lead
  • Support Sr. Communications Lead in developing strategies and approaches to increase FPWC brand awareness which will include events, social media, website content, Knowledge & Resource Sharing Hub, and organizational reports
  • Assist with organizing, coordinating, and maintaining FPWC events, and supporting responses to media inquiries.
  • Working alongside the Sr. Communications Lead, management team, staff, and others to provide advice around the communication needs of the organization (e.g., technical advice, problem solving, data strategies, and reporting)
  • Support and assist with the implementation and maintenance of communication processes, the review and updating of FPWC website and launching of resources
  • Assist the Sr. Communications Lead with providing updates and reports (verbal and written) to the organization and the Board of Directors as required

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, or related field.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience in a communications role preferably within the mental health, wellness and/or social services sector in an Indigenous community organization.

  • Familiar with social media promotion and best practices
  • Ability to review and support the writing of press releases, reports and create social media posts
  • Ability to support with tracking campaign analytics and maintain digital media archives
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work with a high level of accuracy
  • Ability to support organizations communications needs internally and externally
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, design & publishing software, and multiple social media platforms.
  • Ability to liaise with partners, stakeholders, and colleagues
  • High level of professionalism and ability to maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Excellent time management, project management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision while maintaining efficiency and accuracy
  • Ability to work flexible hours as necessary
  • Strong knowledge of Indigenous cultures with a focus on First Nations
  • Ability to work in a manner respectful of First Nations cultures, values, and beliefs
  • Knowledge or use of an Indigenous language and/or bilingualism (French/English) considered an asset
