We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Live Underwriting / Assistant manager to oversee our underwriting team responsible for evaluating live applications in real-time. The successful candidate will play a critical role in leading a team of underwriters to assess risk, ensure compliance, and provide timely and accurate decisions for live underwriting processes. This role requires strong leadership, excellent communication skills, and a deep understanding of underwriting principles and guidelines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Team Leadership & Supervision:
  • Lead and motivate a team of live underwriters to ensure smooth daily operations.
  • Monitor team performance, set targets, and ensure the team meets or exceeds productivity and quality standards.
  • Provide coaching, training, and continuous development opportunities for team members.
  • Conduct regular team meetings to provide feedback, discuss challenges, and share best practices.
  • Underwriting & Risk Assessment:
    • Oversee live underwriting decisions in real-time, ensuring they are compliant with company policies, regulations, and guidelines.
    • Evaluate risk factors and determine the appropriate terms and conditions for each case.
    • Approve or decline applications based on underwriting guidelines and risk analysis.
    • Collaborate with other departments (Sales, Risk, Compliance) to ensure seamless application processing.
  • Process Improvement & Optimization:
    • Identify areas of improvement within the underwriting workflow to increase efficiency and accuracy.
    • Implement process improvements and technology solutions to streamline the underwriting process.
    • Ensure the team is up to date with changes in underwriting guidelines, tools, and systems.
  • Quality Control & Compliance:
    • Ensure all live underwriting decisions are made within the scope of regulatory and company compliance standards.
    • Perform regular audits of underwriting decisions made by the team and provide corrective action as needed.
    • Ensure timely communication and escalation of any compliance issues or policy exceptions.
  • Stakeholder Communication:
    • Act as a point of contact for any escalated underwriting queries or issues from other teams, such as customer service or sales teams.
    • Provide regular reporting on team performance, trends, and risk metrics to senior management.
    • Liaise with stakeholders to ensure alignment on underwriting strategies and operational goals.
  • Technology & System Management:
    • Oversee the use of underwriting software and tools to ensure the team is using them efficiently.
    • Ensure that all live underwriting decisions are captured and tracked appropriately in the system.

    Qualifications:

    • Education:
    • Bachelors degree in business, Finance, Insurance, or related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 5 years of experience in underwriting, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
    • Strong understanding of underwriting principles, risk management, and compliance.
    • Experience in managing live, real-time underwriting teams or similar operations.
    • Proven track record of team management, including setting targets, evaluating performance, and providing feedback.
  • Skills & Competencies:
    • Exceptional leadership and team management skills.
    • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities, particularly in fast-paced environments.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • High attention to detail and accuracy.
    • Familiarity with underwriting software and tools.
    • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
