About Us

The Australian Indigenous Governance Institute (AIGI) is an internationally acknowledged centre for governance knowledge and excellence. We deliver training and resources to meet the self-determined governance needs of Indigenous Australians. We are an independent, Indigenous-led and majority Indigenous-staffed not-for-profit organisation.

Our team brings together a range of practical and theoretical expertise – including community, academic and public sector experience in Indigenous affairs. To ensure we stay connected as a team, we have “all together” days that are hosted around Australia throughout the year and are designed to bring us closer to each other and encourage collaboration, ideation and relationship growth across AIGI.

About the Role

The Director of Learning and Resources will lead our Learning and Development and Research and Resources teams, being a connector in the organisation between the two streams of activity. This newly created role will report to the Chief Executive Officer and have a small number of direct reports.

You will be responsible for the streamlining and synergy between how research and resources are developed and then applied in practice. This opportunity allows you to work across a range of initiatives that are all focused on the below activities:

  • Lead the expansion of the organisation’s fee-for-service arm, identifying new opportunities, driving revenue growth, and developing effective processes to ensure sustainable and scalable operations.
  • Responsible for ensuring the highest standards of quality assurance and effective delivery in all fee-for-service initiatives, guiding teams to exceed client expectations.
  • Provide critical problem-solving and decision-making for the delivery of key projects across the Learning and Development and Research and Resources teams, ensuring alignment with organisational goals.
  • Forge and manage high-priority strategic partnerships, enhancing the organisation’s influence and reach through strategic networking and relationship building.
  • Engage in public speaking at various events, including (but not limited to facilitating workshops, delivering keynote speeches, and participating in panel discussions.
  • Effectively manage complex and challenging relationships, fostering a collaborative and positive working environment.
  • Responsible for ensuring the implementation of key frameworks across two teams to measure and enhance impact.
  • Provide strong leadership and development opportunities for staff.
  • Collaborate with the CEO and Management team to align team activities with the organisation’s strategic objectives and priorities.

What you need to succeed

This position is a Targeted Role in which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are encouraged to apply. As this position works alongside Aboriginal communities, individuals and organisations, AIGI requires candidates that have a deep understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and an ability to communicate effectively.

In addition, the successful candidate for this position will be able to address the following criteria:

  • Demonstrated ability to work closely with Indigenous organisations, communities and individuals in culturally appropriate ways, including an ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Deep understanding of, and experience in, Indigenous governance is highly favourable.
  • Practical experience through serving on boards, committees, or other governance positions also viewed favourably.
  • Completion of relevant studies or significant on-the-job experience in research, resource development, education, training, or Learning and Development, with the ability to acquire new skills as organisational priorities evolve.
  • Experience in establishing and leading Learning and Development and/or Research and Resources teams and/or developing a consulting practice highly favourable.
  • Experience in driving business strategies focused on achieving targets related to self-generated income growth.
  • Experience in designing and prototyping potential services and products, ensuring they meet market needs and organisational goals also viewed favourably.
