Create impact as an Ambiata Machine Learning Engineer
Join the largest general insurance group in Australia and New Zealand.
Part of IAG, Ambiata is an AI and engineering expert unit which provides Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) platforms, products & solutions as well as supporting software infrastructure to IAG (as our parent company) and in a limited fashion to the market. We focus on ethical automated decision systems leveraging advanced AI/ML/GenAI technology.
Your Role
As a Machine Learning Engineer, you’ll play a key role in the Ambiata AI Engineering team, working within cross-functional squads alongside Data Scientists, Product Owners, Business Owners, and Software and Cloud Engineers. Your focus will be designing, developing, and deploying ethical AI solutions across IAG divisions.
You’ll develop and productionise AI/ML models, including containerization, deployment, versioning, and monitoring their performance. In addition, you’ll develop solutions around Generative AI models, such as Large Language Models through open-source deployment or API integration. This involves integrating and optimising generative AI models using advanced Prompt Engineering techniques such as RAG or ReAct, as well as developing specialised LLMs or SLMs through fine-tuning. Outside of active projects, you’ll be encouraged to focus on skill development, continuous learning, and sharing knowledge both within and outside the organization.
This is a permanent role, and we welcome applicants from Gadigal Country (Sydney) or Naarm (Melbourne).
About You
- Minimum 1 year of experience in ML engineering and operations in a commercial environment or 2+ years in academia.
- Proven expertise in setting up independent projects for RAG using Open-source tools like Docker, LangChain, LangGraph, LlamaIndex, data ingestion pipelines, and prompt engineering.
- Strong understanding and experience with ML in production, software engineering skills in Python.
- Experience building data pipelines, ML pipelines, and model deployment frameworks (Docker, Kubernetes, REST APIs, cloud infrastructure).
- Experience with ML tools (Keras, TensorFlow, ScikitLearn, PyTorch) and working with ML models on public cloud platforms (GCP, AWS preferred).
- Strong communication skills, ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical teams, business-driven problem-solving, and recent experience with advanced AI/ML methodologies like OpenAI GPTs, Azure OpenAI, Claude, or Gemini.
