The role 

 The Communications team is responsible for delivering the planning, development and implementation of media and communications strategies and the production of APS content and publications. The department collaborates closely with the policy, social impact, professional resources, digital and marketing teams to deliver media relations, content creation and advocacy campaigns for APS.  

 As part of the Communications team, the Media and Communications Officer will be engaged in delivery of the APS media and communications strategy and activity to build the credibility and visibility of APS and uphold our position as the peak body for psychology.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Establish and maintain strong media relations, ensuring timely responses to enquiries and managing logistics for engagements. 
  • Develop and execute communications activities that inform and engage  
  • Create and tailor engaging written and digital content for newsletters, eDMs, articles, social media, and other APS-owned channels. 
  • Draft speeches, presentations, and communication materials  
  • Support key communications projects  
  • Organise and maintain efficient team processes, planning systems and filing tools  

 

Essential Skills, Qualifications & Personal Attributes: 

  • Tertiary qualifications in journalism, communications, or a related field. 
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in media, journalism, or communications. 
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong organisational skills. 
  • Proven ability to build and maintain long-term relationships with media and key stakeholders. 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with experience crafting media releases, thought leadership articles, presentations, speeches, and promotional materials. 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines and deliver exceptional results.  
  • Proficiency in managing social media platforms. 
  • Experience working within not-for-profit or membership organisation is desirable.  

 

We work in a hybrid model. Most team members currently work from home, with the option to work in our Melbourne CBD office when it suits them, or as the business requires (ie for large planning meetings).  

 

We have staff in most states and territories, and you don’t necessarily need to be Melbourne-based to be successful in this role.
