We are looking for a Portfolio Manager to join our team. In this role you will be an institutional Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) for different types of research grant agreements and contracts within assigned portfolio areas. The role is responsible for providing technical and people l leadership and support to a team of Research Grants & Contracts professionals and for building strong partnerships with key internal and external stakeholders. Portfolio Managers seeks to drive effectiveness and efficiency in research contracting through the adoption of Master Services Agreements (MSAs), standardised templates and streamlined contracting frameworks. In addition to having team leadership and improvement responsibilities, this role also has responsibility for directly reviewing, drafting and negotiating complex research and consulting contracts, subcontracts and variations. The role works closely with researchers, Faculty and Institute Research Services Teams (FIRST), Technical Services Managers, UniServices Business Development Managers, Investment Managers, funders and commercial clients to achieve optimal outcomes within the University’s delegations framework and risk appetite. This role will use expert portfolio knowledge and subject matter expertise to support the Senior Manager, Research Grants & Contracts to design and implement training and improvement initiatives for simple, standard and complex contracts.

This is a full-time, 37.5 hours per week, on a permanent contract. The salary range for this role is $94,900 – $117,200 per annum, depending on experience and qualifications.

Our suitable candidate will meet the following requirements:

  • Tertiary degree in relevant field.
  • Formal qualification or demonstrated experience in contract law.
  • At least 6 years’ experience in the negotiation and management of complex contracts.


Specialist skills and knowledge in:

  • Reviewing and drafting clauses for a range of agreement types.
  • Negotiating complex contracts within policy parameters and preferred contracting positions.
  • Leading teams in high-volume work environments.
  • Relationship management and effective communication with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Attention to detail and an ability to see the big picture.
  • Positive and can-do attitude.
  • Adapting and responding to change.
  • Prioritisation and workload management.
  • Operational reporting.
  • Financial acumen and the ability to critically review project budgets and payment schedules.
