We are seeking an organized, team player, and solution-oriented software engineer to support our Data Analytics and Data Science teams in optimizing our utilization of Redshift, Glue, and other AWS services for building and maintaining a data warehouse. The Principal Data Engineer will be responsible for enhancing data ETL pipelines, designing and managing databases for research and development, supporting the analytical needs for product releases, and taking ownership of data and transformations. The ideal candidate for this role will have prior experience with large-scale ETL pipelines, building scalable, maintainable, and secure backend code, and a strong understanding of fundamental concepts such as unit testing, automation, and continuous delivery.

Responsibilities:
- Use independent judgment and discretion to analyze and translate business specifications and change requests from Data Analytics and Data Science into technical specifications
- Design and implement data infrastructure with a focus on maintainability, usability, scalability, and performance
- Implement and maintain ETL pipelines in SQL and Python with automated testing based on the requirements
- Participate in code and design reviews
- Provide required support and troubleshoot production; this role will be subject to on-call responsibilities (mainly during business hours, as well as occasional nights and weekends)
- Offer expert recommendations on current research to drive scalable and cost-effective solutions
- Follow the company’s development and operational standards and processes
- Complete any additional tasks as they arise
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent years of experience and/or certification in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, or Data Science.
- 7+ years of relevant working experience
- Experience working as a Data Engineer or Cloud Engineer with data experience
- Expertise in data warehousing and ETLs (e.g. AWS Redshift, AWS Glue, Spark, AWS S3 or equivalent)
- Expertise in writing, maintaining, and optimizing analytics SQL queries
- Expertise in the software development process and ability to code in scripting languages for data manipulation (e.g. Python, Pandas, NumPy)
- Demonstrated experience with database (RDBMS, NoSql, Columnstore) schema design
- Hands-on AWS services, Terraform IaC, Containerization, CI/CD experience
- System design and documentation skills, including writing and reviewing code to automate away problems within the squad’s domain
- Understanding of Agile development methodologies (specifically SCRUM)
- Ability and willingness to participate in the team’s on-call rotation
- Experience working to support data analytics and data science teams
Nice to Have:
- Experience using Redshift, AWS Glue, EC2, Lambda, RDS (PostgreSQL), S3, Dynamo
- Experience with Docker, CloudFormation, PostgreSQL, Terraform
- Experience building scalable data processing systems for production environment
- Ability to navigate code, request data from data sources, and code for bug fixes
- Actively seeks feedback and resolves discrepancies with team members
- AWS Certification
