Role Summary: The Product Engineering Lead will drive the end-to-end development and operation of multiple technology applications within a specific domain, leading teams of 50-150 engineering professionals organized as cross functional Agile PODs. This leader will embody the principles of a modern product engineering organisation, focusing on continuous delivery, business engagement, and end-to-end product technology ownership. The role is central to transforming the group into a high-performing product engineering organisation that values engineering excellence and is fully aligned with business and customer priorities.
What does success look like?
- Product-Centric Leadership: Champion a product-first mindset, where teams are empowered to build, run, and continuously improve applications that meet customer and business needs.
- Engineering Guidance and Direction: Lead multiple cross functional Agile POD engineering teams, providing technical guidance, coaching, and support to ensure best practices in software engineering, scalability, and reliability.
- Drive End-to-End Ownership: Manage Agile PODs that own their respective product from development through production. Ensure engineering teams have clear accountability for build, deployment, and run responsibilities.
- High-Performing Team Creation: Foster a culture of high performance and continuous improvement, with teams striving for elite performance metrics in line with DORA (DevOps Research and Assessment) standards.
- Modern Practices: Promote a culture of Experience Led, Modern Applications (Microservices, APIs, Cloud Native, Headless) and Modern Engineering (Full Stack Engg, DevSecOps, Infra as Code, SRE, SDET)
- Strategic Prioritisation: Work closely with business leaders to prioritise features and improvements, balancing immediate needs with long-term capability growth and strategic objectives.
- Experience with Distributed Teams: Proven experience working effectively with geographically distributed teams, maintaining high standards of collaboration and productivity in asynchronous environments.
- Ability to Groom Teams, Succession Planning etc: Develop strategies that can scale effectively, enabling teams to execute through clear delegation and empowering leaders within the group to own and drive their areas.
- Nice to Have : Data-Driven, Customer-Focused Mindset: Use data to drive decisions and continually deepen customer understanding, translating insights into actionable outcomes that improve the customer experience and product quality.
- Nice to Have: Customer Engagement and Alignment: Foster close partnerships with business stakeholders to align on priorities and ensure that engineering efforts are tightly coupled with customer needs and business outcomes.
- Nice to Have: Deep Understanding of Project to Product Principles: Beyond a basic framework shift from project-based to product-focused work, the ideal candidate should have thoroughly engaged with Project to Product by Dr. Mik Kersten. This includes a deep understanding of its key movements, such as Flow Metrics, the Flow Framework, and other approaches to measure and maximise value delivery. The candidate should be able to apply
