HarperCollins Publishers has an exciting opportunity for an organised and enthusiastic individual to join the HarperCollins Children’s Books division in the role of Senior Editor/Editor. 

Join a dedicated children’s books publishing team, working with an incredible array of Australian authors and illustrators, to create quality, bestselling books for kids of all ages.

  • Head office based in Sydney’s CBD
  • Flexible hybrid or remote working arrangement offered
  • Full-time or part-time (4 days)

The purpose of the role is to edit and project-manage a range of children’s books titles including picture books, children’s fiction and YA.

Activities include:

  • Guide authors when they are revising
  • Write reader’s reports, if required
  • Structural editing
  • Copy editing, following house style
  • Proofreading
  • Set up and adhere to each book’s schedule 
  • Keep to strict budgets
  • Review and create metadata 
  • Check copyright permissions
  • Compose an internal design brief, in consultation with publisher 
  • Brief editors, proofreaders and other freelancers
  • Prepare material for samplers and advance reading copies
  • Write blurbs, if required
  • Edit blurbs 
  • Apply for CIP data
  • Guide material through the process of legalling when required
  • Liaise with colleagues in other departments, especially Production, Typesetting, Pre-Press and Design
  • Liaise with publishers, authors and illustrators
  • Proofread book-related material for other departments
  • Check and correct ebooks
  • Help fellow editors, if required
  • Attend meetings relating to the editor’s books
  • And other duties as required

 

Essential skills and experience

  • At least 2 years’ experience project-managing and editing books in a book publishing company
  • Superior working knowledge of English grammar, punctuation and spelling
  • Keen general knowledge
  • Willingness to work to tight deadlines and budgets
  • Willingness to follow a publisher’s brief
  • Great attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal skills
  • Demonstrated experience in structural editing, copy editing and proofreading
  • Ability to edit on-screen (with Track Changes), but also the ability to edit on paper if necessary

 

To be effective in this role you will have exemplary editorial skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and be positive and self-motivated, with a key interest in children’s books.
