As a Staff Backend Java Engineer you will:
- Lead the development of core systems for Planning, Scenario Modeling, and Analytics capabilities.
- Drive intra-system interoperability and scalability.
- Execute the full software development lifecycle: technical analysis, design, development, and unit testing.
- Identify, deliver, and drive technological and architectural improvements and innovations.
- Develop scalable backend services using Java and Spring Boot.
- Design and optimize queries for Google BigQuery, focusing on large-scale data analysis.
- Build and manage OLAP systems for multidimensional data analysis and reporting.
- Create and maintain RESTful APIs with performance, security, and scalability in mind.
- Collaborate with data engineers and product teams to design and implement ETL processes and data pipelines.
- Debug, troubleshoot, and optimize code to enhance system reliability and performance.
- Work with relational databases to design schemas, write complex queries, and maintain data integrity.
- Provide technical leadership and mentoring through code reviews, pairing, ADRs, and presentations.
- Become a subject matter expert in travel and expense data and planning software systems.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Software and QA Engineers, Data Scientists, Product Managers, and Customer Success Professionals.
You’ll be a great fit if you:
- Have 8+ years of experience in backend development with strong proficiency in Java.
- Have hands-on experience with Spring Boot, including dependency injection, REST API development, and microservices architecture.
- Are skilled in writing and optimizing SQL queries and working with relational databases.
- Have experience with BigQuery and large-scale data analysis.
- Have a strong understanding of OLAP systems and multidimensional data modeling.
- Bring experience building or using Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) systems.
- Understand software design patterns, best practices, and architecture principles.
- Have experience going from 0 to 1 in system development.
- Are comfortable working with asynchronous, distributed systems.
- Have strong debugging and problem-solving skills across the stack.
- Are a meticulous, quality-driven engineer with a passion for data and analytics.
- Are highly versatile and thrive in ambiguity, eager to contribute wherever needed.
- Are a lifelong learner who enjoys mentoring and sharing knowledge.
Bonus points if you:
- Have experience with TypeScript and Postgres.
- Have hands-on expertise with Rust.
- Are familiar with Python, Apache Airflow, or identity providers like Auth0.
- Have worked on Data Warehousing and ETL pipeline development.
- Understand Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) patterns.
- Have a background in travel industry data or financial planning and analysis tools like Pigment, Anaplan, or OnPlan.
- Are experienced with AWS services (S3, RDS, EC2, IAM, Fargate, etc.).
