Top 5 Best Travel Gear and Gadgets That Are Worth Your Money

If you’ve been traveling with me for a while, you know that I am one of the most cautious and disciplined money spenders you will find. Growing up without much, I was lucky to figure out early on in my life that I can’t have it all and thus need to prioritize my spending. Eventually, that allowed me to save lots of money and quit my job to travel the world. Although I use hundreds of money saving and spending hacks, on the basic level I have 3 major rules about how I spend my money:Number 1: spend only on things that make money, such as real estate that appreciates in value or stock shares for companies with a big potential.Number 2: spend on things that help me accomplish my dream life, to include life changing experiences such as traveling the world, gear and gadgets for my travel or education that leads to unlimited career opportunities.Number 3: spend on things with high intrinsic value, where the value compensates substantially for the price and that includes the gear and gadgets below. So when preparing for my dream world travel, I wanted to make sure that I love every minute of it and have gadgets that make my travel absolutely amazing. Some of them are essential to any world travel, others add convenience and flexibility to the experience. While traveling through over 50 countries and 5 continents, I tested a variety of different travel gear and gadgets in real life travel situations and here are the top 5 travel products that are worth your money!

1. Canon PowerShot SX60 Digital Camera with 65x Optical Zoom and Built-in WiFi

When choosing a camera to capture my travel experiences around the world I was looking for a great quality camera that is easy to use. I am not a professional photographer so I was not looking for a complicated DSLR type of equipment, yet I wanted top notch quality pictures. Impossible task you may say? Well, I found that and more in Cannon PowerShot SX60.Why it’s worth the money: Compared to DSLR, Cannon PowerShot SX60 is small, light, very easy to use and it takes high quality photos without the need for professional training. Besides the unbelievable quality of pictures, Cannon PowerShot SX60 has 3 key features I absolutely love:
  1. 65xOptical Zoom, which allows me to take pictures of islands, mountains and monuments around the world even if they are very far away.
  2. Rotating viewing screen, which allows me to see myself when taking selfies or position the camera at any angle possible and still see exactly what I am taking a picture off.
  3. WiFi connection, which allows me to connect my phone to the camera, take pictures using my phone as a remote control and download my pictures on my phone immediately to share on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.
Accessories: Don’t forget to grab an extra battery for those long days of sightseeing and extra SD card for storage.

2. GoPro HERO4 SILVER

GoPro Hero 4 Silver

GoPro has been my life saver. I initially bought it since it has a reputation as an indestructible camera for extreme activities like skydiving, zipplining, skiing, or diving and it takes amazing pictures and video in motion. However, since I started using it, I completely fell in love with its wide angle view, high quality pictures and compact size that allows me to carry it whenever I go and get amazing shots without even trying. Why it’s worth the money: Similarly to the Cannon PowerShot SX60 above, GoPro also has WiFi connection so you can easily use your phone as a remote control or view and share the GoPro pictures instantly. When it comes to GoPro you can pretty much take a shot and most likely it will be fantastic! Mine was high in the air flying on the hot air balloon in Cappadocia, Turkey, in the desert like conditions at Wave, Utah and underwater on the Great Barrier Reef. Each time the pictures were amazing. So why do you need both GoPro and Cannon? GoPro is amazing in extreme conditions and perfect for pictures in motion but it does not have a zoom or flash like Cannon does, so I use them for different conditions.Accessories: Don’t forget to grab an extra battery for those long days of sightseeing, extra SD card for storage, selfie stick and the harnesses (head), body and hand.

3. Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro Convertible Touchscreen Ultrabook

Lenovo Yoga Laptop
Let’s just say the “Yoga” name is spot on. This laptop twists and turns so you can adjust the screen to lie completely flat on the keyboard, as if it was a tablet, or get it completely straight as if you were holding a sheet of paper then prop it on your lap for reading or simply use it as a laptop. It is super thin and super light so you can literally carry it anywhere without even feeling the weight. I use it for creating my blog, Facebook, Instagram or Twitter and Pinterest, Youtube, Netflix and anything in between. Why it’s worth the money: Super thin, light, flexible. Perfect for traveling. The keyboard is designed perfectly for long typing. You can set it in any position desired. So far, the best laptop I have ever had.

4. 3TB My Passport Ultra Portable External Hard Drive USB 3.0

So you’ve already have amazing cameras and the laptop to keep all your pictures and videos. You are set. Right? Well, there is something a bit less glamorous and yet more important that you can imagine. That is the external drive. Backing up or saving an extra copy of all your data, especially the pictures and videos from your computer to an external storage drive is a must. Trust me, this is the best thing you can do for yourself whether you travel or stay home. Unfortunately, computers fail all the time, get corrupted, may get a virus or could be stolen. If your files, songs, movies and pictures do not have a copy you may lose all of that in a second. In addition, most laptops don’t have capacity to truly store all your data especially if you tend to take a lot of pictures and videos like I do, so having an external storage is crucial. Why it’s worth the money: For extra primary storage and backup, I love this super secure and portable Western Digital 3 TB external hard drive. It is small and light which makes it perfect for traveling and with 3 TB capacity it has plenty of space for all you travel pictures and videos. For secondary storage and backup, Amazon Cloud Drive is my number one pick.

5. Premium All In One Travel Adapter with 2 USB Ports and Built In Surge Protector

Oh yes, the eternal problem with electric power differences between different countries and regions! Plugging your device to the wrong power source can damage it in no time but did you know that most of our devices those days are actually designed with built in converters so you don’t have to worry about that anymore? Anything from your laptop, to your camera, cell phone and even your electric toothbrush can accept any range of electric power from 110V to 220V, so check your devise’s manual and confirm. Unless you use devises like curling iron or shaver, you may not need the typical power converter and all you need is a simple and inexpensive power adapter. Why it’s worth the money: I like this all in one power adapter compatible with all regions from Europe, to UK, USA and Australia/New Zealand covering over 150 countries. As a bonus it also includes two 2.0 USB charging ports!Ok. But if you do have one of those special devices like my favorite hot air brush that requires a converter to accommodate the electric power range between 110V to 220V, I use the Conair Travel Smart All-In-One Adapter and Converter Combo Unit. It is super easy to use, all in one adapter and converter combo so you don’t have to worry about hundred of different parts. It also includes a surge protector and keeps your device safe from electricity spikes.

BONUS GADGET!

Apple IPod Shuffle 2GB

The only thing better than traveling the world and meeting amazing people is having an unforgettable sound track playing to your dream life. I simply cannot travel without my IPod Shuffle! Why it’s worth the money: It is super teeny-tiny, stores lots of songs and keeps the battery life for a long time. I keep in in my purse at all times, take it when hiking the mountains, relaxing on the beach and running 5Ks in new locations around the world.

  1. Really nice ist and I can only agree with the 5 type of products that you have listed. But I would add a sufficient smartphone to the list. I know that it might be taken for granted nowadays. But it will probably come in more handy than any other electronic product.

My list of 5 would be something like this:
    1. Smartphone
    2. Camera
    3. Laptop
    4. ExternalHDD
    5. Travel adapter

But once again, thank you for a well thought list. 🙂
