Global Health Communications Manager, Senior Writer-Editor (July 2002–June 2018), Washington, DC

Under four successive contracts with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Global Health Bureau within the U.S. Department of State and the First Lady’s Office under 2006–2009 subcontract. (ISTI, Masimax, RTI, JSI, and Insight Systems).

Served as the liaison to U.S. State Department and USAID for global health communications materials creation, production, and dissemination, mainly in infectious diseases, pandemic response and women and children’s health. Lead editor for materials from the President’s Malaria Initiative, Global Health Security Agenda and Pandemic Response Team. Managed creative staff to produce, print, and post online materials for global conferences, meetings, seminars, U.S. Government briefings, Presidential presentations, congressional hearings and First Lady’s Office. Developed quality control and production procedures for communications materials. Edited and wrote reports for U.S. Congress on behalf of USAID. Compiled annual and project final reports for all projects under successive contracts. Maintained knowledge base of U.S. Government Printing Office Style Guides and USAID Branding Guidelines. Managed vendors and freelancers, including bidding, selection and invoicing.

  • Flagged press releases coming out of the First Lady's office (Laura Bush) with misquotes and factual errors. Requested by Ms. Bush to review all materials relating to global health initiatives coming out of her office for the last 2 years she was in the White House.
  • Consulted on all reports pertaining to global health, participating in meetings, where they had an impasse in terms of accomplishing tasks, applying production procedure expertise and superior organization.

Edited features, reports, blog posts, white papers, talking points, brochures, briefs, websites and presentations for clarity and brevity for target audiences including congressional staffers. Wrote and edited annual reports for U.S. Government agencies, documenting budget allocations, task completions, and lessons learned.

  • Created first electronic newsletter sent from USDA and FDA to a set subscriber list (via PalmPilots).
  • Developed quality control and tracking procedures for reports from the field, newsletters, and electronic communications.

  • Wrote introduction to Mah Jongg, the Art of the Game in 2016.
  • Wrote comprehensive biography of Harriet Lane, niece of President James Buchanan, Harriet Lane, America’s First Lady in 2004, which led to lecture series and tours of historical sites.
  • Wrote two books that became Hadassah Book Club selections and feature presentations at all-female performances in Las Vegas: On Tuesdays, They Played Mah Jongg (2005) and Michael’s Secrets (2009).
